From Palm Beach Fla. the doctors rallied for tort reform to help end what some call “jackpot” lawsuits and put a cap on noneconomic damage awards (paid on top of awards for patients’ medical bills and lost wages) to help bring their insurance costs down.

shares slid in after-hours trade after the Minneapolis-based medical device company posted third-quarter net income of $6. 93 million or 9 cents a share below the 11-cent mean estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial. In the prior year’s third quarter the company posted a net loss of $58. 6 million or 84 cents a share including $61… Revenue in the quarter ended Sept. 29 rise 20% to $109 million missing the consensus analyst target of $113 million. American Medical cuts its 2007 forecast for earnings per share from continuing operations to a range of 40 cents to 45 per share from 52 cents to 60 cents a share and cut its revenue forecast to a range of $458 million to $464 million from $470 million to $482 million. For the fourth-quarter the company expects per-share earnings of 15 cents to 20 cents on revenue of $124 million to $130 million.
