5 billion is in thepipeline for medical tourism industry in the country. The amount will be usedfor setting up affordable hospitals and budget hotels for patients?relatives in the country sheadded. The announcement assumesimportance as Indian private hospitals are increasingly finding a mention in thetravel itineraries of foreigners with the trend of medical tourism catching upin the country. If industry estimates are to be believed the size of themedical tourism industry stands at Rs 1200-1500 crore (Rs 12-15 billion).

08% of the one billion Indians have secured medical insurancecover since 1986 when health insurance was first introduced in the country. Shortage of hospitals and insurance providers poverty lack of co-ordinationbetween hospitals and insurance firms and people’s belief in destiny have beencited as some of the reasons for the poor response. The potential market forhealth insurance is about Rs 30000 crore but at present it is just limitedto Rs 1400 crore. And moneywise the health insurance sector stands at just 3%of the insurance sector.
