Medical peace corps wins praise

The team consisting of 17 doctors dentists and pharmacists as well as 30 nurses and volunteers was organized by the Taiwan Root Medical Peace Corps (TRMPC) a private medical charity dedicated to providing international medical aid. Led by TRMPC president Liu Chi-chun (¼B±?s) the group arrived in New Delhi early on Wednesday to a warm welcome from Andrew Hsia (®L¥?¥) Taiwan’s representative to India. Hsia cooked a Taiwanese-style breakfast for the team members who had not had a hot meal since starting their tour. Liu said in an interview that witnessing the needs of the poor in such a backward area had helped corps members realize how people can contribute to helping others adding that the experience from the medical service tour was of great personal benefit.

Backed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown it is hoped the £500m centre will lead to pioneering cancer research. But King’s Cross residents said it was a "completely inappropriate" site for the centre and the land should be used for housing and community facilities. Developer the Medical Research Council said it would consult residents on the plan. Camden Council did not comment.

The plans died on the vine after initially being approved by the county Board of Commissioners as members increasingly worried that the expansion could bankrupt the county’s paramedic program. The union representing Flint firefighers also lobbied against the plan that would have taken about $800000 in paramedic millage money from city and used it instead on county paramedics who are also certified police officers. “(County Controller) George Martini told us it would break the bank” said Archie Bailey chairman of the county commission.

The problem first affected the three doctors who graduated last year and then the nine others who graduated this year. Chief Medical fficer Dr. Rhonda Sealy-Thomas explained that the Holberton Hospital is currently unable to offer the graduates supervision for the additional clinical rotations required by the local medical registration board. The board is not satisfied that those returning to Antigua from Cuba are ready to practise.

Industry urges separate regulation for medical equipment

The medical industry has raised ’serious concerns’ for including medical devices such as apparatuses machines appliances and implants as part of the bill that is mainly meant for drugs and cosmetics the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said. ‘There is also a need for separate provisions for the regulation of medical devices since they cannot be clubbed with provisions relating to drugs and cosmetics in view of the completely different characteristic of devices and equipments as compared to drugs and cosmetics’ CII said in a statement. ‘The proposed constitution of the Central Drugs Authority of India and Drugs Consultative Committee needs to be reconsidered to increase the maximum number of members to include representatives from all fields including manufacturers of drugs cosmetics and medical devices who can understand and analyse the points from the industry-specific perspective’ it added. The chamber also urged against any overlapping of policies as the government is also envisaging setting up of a Medical Devices Regulatory Authority of India (MDRA) which is expected to issue guidelines for medical equipment and devices.
