8 crore allotted for an emergency trauma care centre at Kilpauk Medical College CHENNAI: Emergency medical care in the city has received a fillip in the State budget for 2008-09 presented on Thursday. A new scheme provides a common number to request emergency ambulance services for people anywhere in the State. “A computer-based central control room along with GPS-fitted ambulances will provide the service. The Police and Fire Services departments will also be integrated to this system” Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan said in his budget speech.
China to Crack Down on Medical Device Makers

The Chinese government will assign compulsory recalls and levy penalties of three times the amount of the medical device value to those manufacturers which do not voluntarily recall products that pose a potential safety hazard. According to the rules medical device producers should maintain minutes on the handling of recalled products and report to the regulator of the Food and Drug Administration.
Medical School Ups Financial Aid

Flier announced today that the school will eliminate the family contribution starting next year for students whose parents earn less than $120000 annually. The move means that the Medical School one of the largest of the elite medical schools will have a more generous financial aid program than all but a few of the nation’s colleges. The annual cost of attending the Medical School is approximately $65000 according to school officials. The initiative represents a 40 percent or $3 million increase in Medical School’s aid budget and will affect one third of the 700 MD students according to a letter Flier sent to the Medical School community today.

A program called Lean aims to help the hospital improve processes reduce waste and improve efficiency by applying principles developed by the car manufacturer. "Lean is a term coined in the late ’80s as a generic term to define Toyota’s production system" said Kevin Frieswick the hospital’s Lean process manager. "It just means a business system that strives to identify and eliminate waste. "Though the term is most often thought of as applying to manufacturing companies Frieswick yesterday said it can just as easily be applied to health care.
