Jason Scheuerman 20 who was found dead in his barracks in Iraq in 2005. Three weeks before the soldier’s death an unlicensed psychologist asked by the soldier’s captain to evaluate him said in a report that Scheuerman was “capable of claiming mental illness” to manipulate superiors and sent him back to his unit. In a telephone interview on Thursday Chris Scheuerman said military medical commanders “absolutely” should’ve known better than to send unlicensed psychologists to war. “Any reasonable person would know that the worst place to train a psychologist would be in a combat environment” said Scheuerman a former Army master sergeant who served in the Special Forces. A copy of the Army Medical Command’s inspector general’s investigation completed in November was obtained by The Associated Press using a Freedom of Information Act request. Prior to a change in policy in 2006 it was a common practice in Iraq for the military to deploy unlicensed providers with the stipulation that they work under supervision. The policy was similar to that in civilian settings but was changed after the military determined supervision was difficult to do in a combat setting.

us Digg This Medical costs within California’s workers’ compensation insurance system have risen significantly since 2005 and are increasing what employers pay for the coverage a new study has found. The research also found that those costs would have been billions more without system reforms earlier this decade. The California Workers’ Compensation Institute a research organization made up of insurers and self-insured employers recently released the study on post-reform changes in workers’ comp medical payments in the Golden State. The study is the fourth in a five-part series updating data on claim outcomes following system reforms between 2002 and 2004. All the data in the report reflect when injuries occurred — known as the accident year — instead of when an accident was reported.

Citing the need to examine the option of allowing and regulating dispensaries in more detail the council imposed upon itself an August 30 deadline to come up with something. ?Part of the argument against [regulation] is that it?s in conflict with federal law? said Councilmember Michael Bennett who found issue with a document produced by city staff indicating that medical marijuana dispensaries attract crime. ?If we were to prohibit businesses that attract crime we could go on a rampage? he said pointing to stores selling liquor and firearms as more of a risk. Several medical marijuana patients showed up at the hearing to offer comment with one man ? who said he was suffering from a painful digestive tract ailment known as Crohn?s disease ? getting on his knees before the council.
